Twitter Marketing Strategy For Small Business!

twitterIn this article I will provide a detailed twitter marketing strategy using a financial planning or financial services organization as an example of how to use Twitter to build your social media presence and get new customers/clients in the door.

Keep in mind that just because I am using  financial services as an example of a twitter social media marketing plan it doesn’t mean it ‘won’t apply to your business’. As a matter of fact, you can probably do even better in your business using this plan as model. Take notes and ask questions if you are not clear.

Here is a Twitter marketing plan you can model (very detailed and specific!):

I suggest using hootsuite.com (or another scheduling platform) to schedule your tweets as much as possible. It frees you up time wise and helps your posting be consistent.

You’ve only got 140-160 characters to use, so keep it short! (you’ll get used to writing these after a month of so)

Normal is 7-12 per day. Think quality and quantity.

Without a doubt you must retweet or comment on at least 5 other tweets at least 5 days a week if you want to build an authentic and interactive

Twitter page.

Because you have so much to input on a weekly basis, it will probably take you 30-60 minutes a week to schedule your Tweets. It should take approx. 20 minutes a day to retweet and comment. To keep RT/comment time low, create “lists” of Twitter accounts whose tweets you really want to read.

Don’t automatically update your twitter with your facebook posts. It comes across on Twitter very poorly. (it takes 30 extra seconds to write it for Twitter)

Include # (hashtags) in most of your tweets so that it’s easier for people to find you. These can be things like #mortgage, #money, or other related items.

I use excel spread sheets (you can use any spreadsheet program) to 1-create my schedule so it’s easy to read and follow as I schedule my tweets each week (I printed it out so it’s handy). 2-store all my tweets. This way I can pre-write 50-75% of my tweets and always have a copy of what I’ve sent out so I don’t unintentionally tweet something again. If you have Excel I can send you my schedule template if you would like.

Small Business Tweet Ideas:

  1. Your Facebook link. Share something like “Join me on Facebook for conversation about wealth, success and money .” You only have to write 1 tweet about FB, just update it if things change or every 6-10 months.
  2. What you do. This should be a short phrase like “I help individuals manage their finances and plan for the future. How can I help you?”
  3. Your services. You’ve got 7 services (advisory, business, estate, finc, investment, retirement, trust) on your areas of expertise page. I would write 1 tweet for each service that briefly tells about that service and include your website link in the posts. (update every 6-10 months).
  4. Share about your newsletter. Another simple tweet that basically tells followers the subject, content and/or frequency of your newsletter, and a link to sign up. (update every 6 months).
  5. Share tips, articles and quotes about using/caring for money. Write 40 tips about money and share 4 per week. Share 2 articles per week, and 1 quote about money per week. Any order is fine, but again don’t share them all in a row. (4 tips, 2 articles, 1 quote).
  6. Talk about family. You can talk about kids, food, relationships, growth, health, fun things to do and holidays (7 topics for 7 days). So you’ll need 52 posts for each of the 7 topics. You can ask questions, share tips and ideas, share articles (don’t share more than 1 article a week), and quotes (again, not more than 1 per week).
  7. Talk about business. 7 topics: marketing, communication, leadership, teamwork, goals, technology, and growth. You can share articles, ideas, ask questions, share resources, and share tips. You’ll need 52 posts for each of the 7 topics here as well.
  8. Talk about investing, taxes and insurance topics. Write 20 tips for each of the 3 topics and share 3 (1 from each topic) per week (60 tips total). Share 2 articles per week, ask one question to your followers each week about one of the 3 topics and share 1 reminder about investing, taxes or insurance per week. Any order is fine, but again don’t share them all in a row. (4 tips, 2 articles, 1 reminder, 1 question).
  9. Talk about wealth planning. From your “values based planning” page there are 3 sections: finc independence, family legacy and social capital. You’ll share about each topic twice per week. You can share articles, tips, ask questions, share resources and even bring people through steps to be financially well planned.
